Scott Treleaven
Canadian artist Scott Treleaven’s focus is the connection between the queer and the occult. In his latest exhibit, at John Connelly Presents in Chelsea, this link is manifest in what he calls the “threshold” experience: the moment of transition and in between. Treleaven has created drawings, collages, sculpture and video showing boys/men at the cusp of adulthood, and in ambiguous shifts between physical and emotional stages. A young man kisses a skull on the mouth. The fingertips on a man’s hand are transformed into burning candles. A floor installation of boots and clothing devoid of their owners implies ghosts of boys who have left this life. The show is not so much spooky as delicately somber, and as such it is surprisingly affecting. 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Tues.–Sat., until May 10, John Connelly Presents, 625 W. 27th St., johnconnellypresents.com, 212-337-9563.
